Oral Conscious Sedation
The comfort of our patients is one of our top concerns at the Oxford Smile Center. In addition to using local anesthetics to numb the treatment area, Dr. Khoury offers oral conscious sedation dentistry. This option helps reduce the anxiety that some patients experience when undergoing a dental procedure.
If you are a candidate for oral conscious sedation, the doctor will prescribe a sedative to be taken orally prior to the dental procedure.
The anti-anxiety drug that will be administered comes from the benzodiazepine family. While all benzodiazepines act as sedatives and anti-anxiety drugs, some are more targeted at brain areas which control sleep while others are more targeted to control emotions such as fear.
Since you will be receiving a mild dose, you will remain awake and aware and be able to follow instructions during the procedure. The sedative simply acts to relieve anxiety and helps you feel calm.
If you wish to learn more about oral conscious sedation or have any concerns, please contact Dr. Khoury.
Important: Benzodiazepines are Central Nervous System (CNS) depressants. They should not be mixed with other CNS depressants such as alcohol. Once you take the sedative, you will not be able to drive for a 24-hour period.
