Inlays and Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays are used to repair rear teeth that have mild to moderate decay or have been cracked. Teeth that have more serious damage may require a crown as the recommended restoration option.

Inlays and onlays are also often used to replace metal fillings for patients that are interested in a natural looking smile, since the materials can be made from a tooth-colored composite resin or porcelain.

The procedure typically is performed in one appointment using Cerec®.

CEREC | Inlays and Onlays | Oxford Smile Center

CEREC® is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. With CEREC® there's no need for us to make an impression and send it to a lab. We won't inconvenience you by asking you to return for a second visit.

Restoration is natural looking, because it uses a durable ceramic material that matches the natural color of other teeth in your mouth.

Examination and Prep
Dr. Khoury will examine your tooth and determine the appropriate type of ceramic to be used. A local anesthetic will be used for your comfort and your tooth is prepared for a restoration, removing any decayed area and weakened tooth structure.

Optical Impression
Dr. Khoury will then make an optical impression of the tooth. It's a simple procedure that coats your tooth with a non-toxic, tasteless powder; a high-definition camera is then used to take a digital image of your tooth. This process only takes a couple of minutes.

Permanent Cermanic Restoration
The CEREC 3D software is used to create a permanent ceramic restoration for your tooth; no temporaries are needed. The software converts the digital image into a 3-D virtual model on the computer monitor. Dr. Khoury will then design your restoration virtually. The design is extremely accurate.

CEREC milling
The virtual Inlay/Onlay is then used to create your new crown using a milling unit located on location at the Oxford Smile Center. A ceramic block that matches your tooth shade is placed in the milling unit and within 20 minutes, your restoration is finished and ready for placement.

Placement and Bonding
Your new Inlay/Onlay is then tested for proper fit to ensure your bite is correct. We polish the ceramic and bond it to the prepared tooth.

Your tooth has been restored in a single visit!
Your restoration will now prevent bacteria from entering the tooth and forming cavities.
