Cavities and Fillings
The goal at the Oxford Smile Center is to help our patients prevent cavities by scheduling regular checkups and providing resources to help our patients take excellent care of their teeth on a daily basis.
When an examination does uncover a cavity, it's important to receive treatment as soon as possible to eliminate the decay and restore the tooth structure using a filling material.
Several different materials are available to fill the tooth. The most common are silver (amalgam), white (resin), porcelain, or gold. After the decay is removed, the filling material is layered on top of a base to restore the damaged tooth.
What are cavities?
Cavities, or dental caries, are caused by the bacteria in your mouth turning simple sugars into acids. These acids attack the mineral crystals in teeth and can lead to decay of the tooth.
Fluoride can be a tremendous help in preventing and repairing teeth, but if the decay breaks through the enamel to cause a cavity, the damage is permanent.
At this stage, Dr. Khoury will need to remove the decay and fill the cavity. Left untreated, the decay will eventually destroy the tooth.
